12-Foot vs 16-Foot Platform Body on a Dually: Which Length?

Length is the first decision on any dually platform body, and it shapes everything after it: what you can haul, where you can park and how much payload you actually use. Here is how a 12-foot and a 16-foot platform compare.

12-Foot Platform: Nimble and Practical

  • Best for: tight job sites, city work, pallets, tools and mixed loads
  • Easier to turn, back up and park, especially at plant gates and in town
  • Less body weight, which leaves more of the chassis rating for cargo
  • Limit: 8-foot lumber, long pipe and large equipment may overhang or not fit

16-Foot Platform: Capacity and Reach

  • Best for: long material, bigger machinery, multiple pallets and ranch or oilfield hauling
  • More deck space means fewer trips
  • Limit: longer turning radius, more body weight and a higher price
  • Cab-to-axle and chassis wheelbase must support the length, so confirm fitment before ordering

How to Decide

  • List your longest and heaviest regular load. Size the deck to that, not the rare exception.
  • Check the chassis GVWR and subtract body weight to know your real payload.
  • Think about where the truck works: tight yards favor 12 feet, open ranch and field work favors 16.
  • Consider add-ons such as headache racks, toolboxes and tie-downs, which use deck and weight capacity.
