Hurricane Season Work Truck Prep: Flatbed and Service Body Checklist for the Gulf Coast

Along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast, hurricane season is a work season. Utility crews, debris haulers, contractors and restoration teams all depend on trucks that are ready before the storm. Here is a practical checklist for your flatbed or service body.

1. Inspect Tie-Downs and Deck Hardware

Check chains, straps, D-rings and stake pockets for wear. Compare setups in our guide to airline track vs D-ring tie-downs. Replace anything frayed or rusted.

2. Check Lighting

Storm response means night work and poor visibility. Make sure tail, marker and work lights function; see LED vs halogen work lights.

3. Organize Lockable Storage

Chainsaws, tarps, straps, fuel cans and first-aid gear should live in lockable compartments. Browse service bodies for sale or STI service bodies if your current setup falls short.

4. Know Your Payload

Debris, generators and water add up quickly. Use our walkthrough on calculating payload after an upfit so you never exceed GVWR.

5. Plan for Flexible Decks

An open flatbed or platform body hauls generators, pallets of water and building materials without fuss.

6. Do Basic Maintenance Early

Tires, brakes, fluids and a full tank before a storm warning, not after, since shops and fuel run short fast.
