Good lighting keeps crews safe on dark roadsides, in oilfield lease roads and on after-hours job sites. LED lighting has largely replaced halogen and incandescent on work trucks because it draws less current, runs cooler and lasts far longer. Here is how to plan an upgrade for a flatbed or service body.
Start With the Job
A crew working along a highway needs amber warning strobes visible from a distance. A crew loading at night needs wide, even scene lighting around the bed. Decide which matters most before you buy anything.
Key Lighting Zones
- Warning lights: amber strobes or light bars on the headache rack, cab roof or rear of the body. Check state rules for color and use.
- Scene and work lights: flood-pattern LED pods on the sides and rear of a service body or on a rack above a flatbed.
- Tail, brake and turn lights: sealed LED units are far more reliable than bulb-type lamps, especially when hauling trailers through mud and water.
- Compartment lights: small LED strips inside service body compartments make finding tools at night much easier.
Wiring Matters More Than the Lights
Most lighting failures come from poor wiring. Use fused, relayed circuits straight from the battery, sealed connectors, and loom in any area exposed to road spray. Switch panels inside the cab keep everything organized. Installing lights while the body is being upfit means wires are hidden cleanly instead of zip-tied afterward.
Placement Tips
- Mount work lights high enough to avoid glare off the bed or tools.
- Keep lights clear of crane swing and ladder paths. If you run a crane, see our Tiger crane options.
- Protect lenses with guards if you load heavy gear, and pair with a headache rack for a strong mounting point.
Power Budget
LEDs are efficient, but a full package of strobes plus floods can still add up. If crews idle for long periods, ask about upgraded alternators or a secondary battery so you are not stranded at the end of the shift. Also see our guide on cold-weather truck prep.
