Do the Payload Math Before You Choose
A typical 9 ft steel service body weighs 1,800–2,400 lbs. Add a service body crane (1,200–2,000 lbs), a compressor (300–500 lbs), a welder (400–600 lbs), tools and parts (800–1,500 lbs), plus two people and fuel. You clear 4,000 lbs quickly — which is why a loaded 2500 ends up overweight and a 3500 doesn’t.
- Tools and a few fittings only? A 2500 with a lighter aluminum or short steel service body works.
- Full service body with a compressor and welder? Go 3500 SRW at minimum.
- Any crane, or you run heavy every day? 3500 DRW — or step up to a 4500/5500 chassis cab.
CA Lengths and Body Fit
Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups usually land at 56–60″ CA after the factory bed is removed (crew cab short bed) or around 84″ CA on a 3500 DRW long bed. That means an 8 ft service body on most 2500/3500 pickups and a 9 ft body on a long-bed dually or a chassis cab. On a 4500/5500 chassis cab you can order 60″, 84″, or 108″ CA from the factory.
