Bale beds are purpose-built — the frame, hydraulics, and bed rails are all engineered around handling round bales specifically.
What a Hay Flatbed Is Built For
A standard hay flatbed is more versatile. It’s a flat, open deck (often with stake pockets or rail sides) that you load with a separate tractor, spike, or loader arm. It doesn’t have built-in hydraulics for bale handling, but it can haul square bales, round bales, equipment, fencing supplies, and general ranch gear — anything that fits on a flat deck. If your operation already has a tractor with a bale spike and you need one truck body that pulls double duty for hay AND everything else, a hay flatbed is the more flexible choice.

Bale beds cost more upfront because of the hydraulic system, and they need occasional maintenance on the spike, arms, and hydraulic lines.
