Whether you haul pipe, lumber, equipment, or hay, how you secure the load matters for safety and for avoiding roadside fines. This guide from Star Truck Equipment in Wharton, TX covers the basics for Texas and Louisiana flatbed operators. It is general information, not legal advice; always check current FMCSA and state DPS rules for your situation.

Know the Basics: Working Load Limit

Every strap, chain, and binder has a working load limit (WLL) printed on a tag. Total WLL of your tie-downs should be at least half the weight of the cargo, and each article needs enough tie-downs for its length and weight. Replace any strap that is cut, frayed, or missing its tag.

How Many Tie-Downs?

As a general FMCSA rule, cargo under 5 feet and under 1,100 lb needs at least one tie-down; longer or heavier cargo needs more, typically one per 10 feet of length plus an extra, with at least two for anything over 5 feet. Loose items need to be blocked, tarped, or contained.

Build the Deck for Securement

Good hardware makes compliance easy. A flatbed with stake pockets, D-rings, and a rated headache rack gives you solid anchor points and forward blocking. See our comparison of airline track vs D-ring tie-downs to choose the right layout.

Chains, Straps, or Both?

Use chains and binders for heavy equipment and steel; use ratchet straps with edge protectors for lumber, finished goods, and anything with sharp corners. Keep a few spare straps, corner guards, and a tarp in a compartment on your service body so they are always at hand.

Inspect Before Every Trip

Do a walk-around after the first few miles and re-check tension. Look for shifting loads, loose binders, and flapping tarps, and keep your headache rack and deck free of damage. Browse our truck accessories for tie-down hardware and add-ons.
