New vs Used Flatbed or Service Body: What to Check Before You Buy in Texas

Every fleet manager and owner-operator eventually asks whether a used truck body is worth it. Sometimes yes, often no. Here is how we think about it at Star Truck Equipment in Wharton, TX.

When Used Can Make Sense

A used body can work for a short-term job, a low-hours yard truck, or a budget where uptime matters less. The body must fit your chassis, so check cab-to-axle length, dual vs single rear wheels and mounting points before anything else.

Inspection Checklist

  • Frame and crossmembers: look for rust-through, cracks and old weld repairs
  • Deck: warped or patched floors, soft spots on wood decks
  • Compartments (service bodies): door seals, latches, hinges, water in the bottoms
  • Wiring and lights: corroded harnesses are a common headache
  • Mounting hardware: stripped or missing brackets and hold-downs
  • Weight: older steel bodies are often heavier, which eats payload

Hidden Costs of Used

Refitting a body to a different chassis, new lighting to meet DOT rules, repainting, and replacing locks add up quickly. See our accessories for common add-ons. Used bodies also carry no warranty and may be missing the specs you need.

Why New Often Wins

A new flatbed or service body is sized to your exact chassis, installed professionally, and comes with manufacturer coverage. Browse truck beds for sale to compare configurations. Lighter modern bodies can also improve payload and fuel use, and new equipment may qualify for tax benefits; see our Section 179 guide and consult your tax advisor.

Our Advice

Price the full used package, including refit, then compare it to a new install. If the gap is small, new is usually the better long-term value.
