Gulf Coast humidity, salt air, fertilizer, and road brine are hard on steel. A good finish buys you years, but only if you maintain it. This guide from Star Truck Equipment in Wharton, TX covers practical rust prevention for steel flatbeds and service bodies across Texas and Louisiana.

1. Wash Off the Corrosives

Rinse the deck, undercarriage, and crossmembers after hauling fertilizer, salt, chemicals, or driving near the coast. Pay attention to areas where water and debris sit: stake pockets, corners, and the underside of the headache rack.

2. Fix Chips Early

Chains, tools, and equipment chip paint and powder coat. Sand the chip back to clean metal, spot-prime, and touch up with matching paint. A chip left alone through one wet season can start creeping rust under the surrounding coating. For background on finishes, see our comparison of powder coat vs galvanized.

3. Keep Drainage Clear

Service body compartments and toolbox floors should drain. Clear drain holes, replace worn door seals, and do not leave wet gear or tarps inside. Standing moisture is the fastest route to rusted compartment floors.

4. Protect Hardware and Welds

Bolts, hinges, latches, and weld seams rust first. Use a corrosion inhibitor or light grease on hinges and latches, and inspect welds each season. Replace rusted fasteners with zinc-plated or stainless hardware.

5. Use Liners and Mats Wisely

Rubber mats can trap water against the deck. If you use one, lift it periodically and let the deck dry. Our post on aluminum vs steel in Gulf Coast humidity explains when aluminum is the better material choice.

6. Inspect Twice a Year

Do a spring and fall walkaround: look at underside crossmembers, mounting brackets, and anywhere dissimilar metals touch. Catching surface rust early is a quick sanding-and-paint job.
