Truck Bed Maintenance Tips for Texas Heat and Humidity

Texas weather is tough on truck beds. Between the extreme heat, humidity, coastal salt air, and UV exposure, even a well-built flatbed needs some attention to stay in top condition. Here are our maintenance recommendations from years of selling and installing truck beds in Wharton, TX.

Steel Truck Bed Maintenance

  • Wash regularly — Rinse off salt, mud, chemicals, and debris monthly at minimum
  • Touch up scratches immediately — Any chip in the powder coat exposes bare steel to moisture. Keep a can of matching spray paint and touch up scratches as they appear
  • Wax or spray sealant — A coat of automotive wax or spray-on sealant adds UV and moisture protection
  • Check underside annually — Get under the truck and inspect the bottom of the bed for rust spots
  • Keep drain holes clear — Flatbed bodies have drain holes that can clog with debris. Clear them so water doesn’t pool
  • Lubricate moving parts — Hitch mechanisms, stake pocket latches, and any moving components benefit from annual lubrication

Aluminum Truck Bed Maintenance

Aluminum beds require significantly less maintenance since they don’t rust. However:

  • Wash regularly to prevent oxidation buildup (white chalky residue)
  • Apply aluminum polish 1-2 times per year for appearance
  • Check mounting hardware for looseness (aluminum can work-harden and loosen bolts)

LED Lighting Maintenance

  • Test all lights monthly — tail, turn, brake, marker, and backup
  • Clean lens covers to maintain brightness
  • Replace failed LEDs promptly — operating with burnt-out lights is a DOT violation
