Cylinder storage: Oxygen, acetylene, argon, and CO2 cylinders require secure, upright storage with chain restraints. Service body cylinder compartments are designed specifically for this — a standard flatbed requires a fabricated rack.
Rod and wire storage: Welding rod needs to stay dry. Rod ovens are common on serious welding trucks. Wire spools need secure, accessible storage.
Cable management: Long welding cables need organized storage — a sloppy cable layout causes damage and costs time running cables at each job site.
Grinder and tool storage: Angle grinders, clamps, chipping hammers, wire brushes, and PPE all need dedicated, organized compartments.

Service Bodies — The Professional Welder’s First Choice

For full-time mobile welders and welding contractors, a service body (utility body) is the most practical and professional solution. The multiple lockable compartments solve the cylinder storage, rod storage, and tool organization challenge in one purpose-built package.

STI (Service Trucks International) service bodies are a premium choice for serious welding operations. STI builds custom compartment layouts that can be configured specifically for welding truck applications — cylinder compartments with proper chain anchor points, dedicated rod storage with weather sealing, and machine access panels that let you reach your welder without climbing in the truck bed. The tradeoff is organization — service bodies beat flatbed/toolbox setups for compartmentalization and weather protection.

The Bedrock Granite Series is preferred by welders doing heavy-duty construction and pipeline work — the heavier construction handles the constant vibration of generator and welder operation better than lighter-gauge flatbeds over time.

Crane Body + Welder Combo — For Structural Welders

Structural welders and ironworkers doing shop fabrication delivery, on-site structural work, or equipment repair often need both welding capability and lifting capability. The STI crane body with Tiger Crane combined with a welder setup on the same truck is a specialty build we handle regularly. This typically runs on a Ford F-550 or Ram 5500 chassis cab — you need the payload capacity to carry crane, body, welder, cylinders, and consumables simultaneously.

Pipeline Welders — Oilfield-Grade Requirements

Pipeline welders operate under stricter requirements than most other trades. Equipment must be secured per DOT requirements, rod storage must meet OSHA guidelines in many jurisdictions, and the truck needs to handle extended remote operations far from supply points. For pipeline welding trucks, we recommend:

Chassis cab minimum F-450/Ram 4500 — the payload capacity margin matters when you’re fully loaded.
STI or RKI service body with custom cylinder compartments — don’t try to retrofit a standard service body for pipeline use.
Generator-ready configuration — ensure your body has proper mounting and ventilation for your generator setup.
