The single most common ordering mistake we fix is cab-to-axle. A 56″ CA bed will not sit right on a 60″ CA truck, and the difference is only four inches. Get it wrong and the bed either overhangs the rear axle badly or leaves an ugly gap behind the cab — plus mounting holes that don’t line up. Here’s how to measure once and order right.

What cab-to-axle actually means

Cab-to-axle (CA) is the distance from the back of the cab to the centerline of the rear axle. It is not bed length, and it is not wheelbase. On a dually with two rear axles you measure to the theoretical center between them. Bed manufacturers build to CA because that measurement determines where the bed’s subframe crossmembers and hitch have to land.

How to measure your truck in two minutes

  • Park on level ground. Drop a plumb line (or hold a tape square) at the very back of the cab.
  • Measure straight back along the frame rail to the center of the rear hub. That number is your CA.
  • On a dually with tandem axles, measure to the midpoint between the two hubs.
  • Round to the nearest standard: 56″, 60″, 84″. If you land between sizes, call us before ordering.
  • Write down whether the truck is SRW or DRW — bed width depends on it.

Why the gooseneck matters here

On a properly matched bed, the gooseneck ball ends up close to over the rear axle. That is what keeps a loaded gooseneck trailer stable and keeps tongue weight where the truck can carry it. Order a 56″ CA bed for a 60″ CA truck and the ball moves forward of ideal; go the other direction and it moves back, which pushes weight behind the axle and makes the trailer feel light in the front. Neither is safe with a heavy load.

What we do about it

Bring the truck to Wharton or send us a photo of the frame and the VIN, and we’ll confirm CA, wheel configuration, and hitch rating before anything gets ordered. Most in-stock beds go on in one business day once fitment is confirmed.
