If you’re hauling gravel, sand, base material, or aggregate around Texas or Louisiana job sites, the truck body you choose makes or breaks your daily productivity. The two most common options — a dump body and a stake body — both handle bulk material, but they do it in very different ways. Here’s how to figure out which one actually fits your work.
Dump Body: Built for Volume and Speed
A dump body is purpose-built for moving loose material fast. Load gravel in, drive to the drop point, hit the hydraulic lift, and the material dumps out the back in seconds — no shoveling, no manual unloading. For contractors who are hauling gravel multiple times a day (driveway base, French drain rock, road base for pads), the time savings alone pay for the upfit.
Dump bodies also handle a wider range of material without extra prep. Wet sand, crushed limestone, pea gravel, and road base all dump cleanly with a properly angled bed and a good tailgate seal. Most dump bodies on a 1-ton chassis (Ford F-350, Ram 3500, Chevy Silverado 3500HD) carry 3–5 cubic yards depending on sides height, which is plenty for most residential and light commercial gravel jobs.
The tradeoff: dump bodies cost more upfront due to the hydraulic hoist, and they add weight and complexity that requires occasional maintenance (hydraulic fluid, cylinder seals, PTO or electric-over-hydraulic pump).
Stake Body: Flexible and Lower-Cost
A stake body is a flatbed with removable side and end stakes/gates that let you retain loose material or haul palletized and irregular loads. There’s no hydraulic lift — you’re unloading with a tailgate spreader, by hand, or with a separate loader/skid steer. For hauling gravel, that means more labor per load, but you get a body that also hauls lumber, pipe, fencing material, landscape supplies, and equipment without any modification.
If gravel hauling is only part of your workload — say, a fencing contractor or landscaper who moves aggregate occasionally but also needs to haul materials and equipment daily — a stake body is usually the smarter buy. It’s less expensive, lighter, and needs almost no maintenance beyond the usual truck bed care.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose a dump body if gravel, sand, or aggregate hauling is your primary daily task and speed of unloading matters (driveway contractors, excavation crews, landscaping supply delivery).
- Choose a stake body if you haul a mix of loose material and other cargo, or if budget and simplicity matter more than unload speed.
