Both trucks are similar here, which is why 9-foot and 11-foot service bodies like the STI service bodies fit both platforms well. Always confirm the exact CA for the specific build you’re ordering — trim level and bed configuration affect it.

GVWR and Payload: Can It Handle the Weight?

A loaded steel service body with equipment, tools, and supplies can easily add 2,000–3,500+ lbs to your truck. GVWR determines how much total weight the truck is legally rated to carry.

  • Ram 3500 DRW (diesel): GVWR up to 14,000 lbs — among the highest in the segment
  • Chevy Silverado 3500HD DRW (diesel): GVWR up to 13,300 lbs

The Ram 3500 edges out the Silverado 3500HD in maximum payload — an important factor for heavy-duty service work. If you’re running a large RKI crane body or a fully stocked CM service body, every pound of payload margin counts.

Engine Options: Cummins vs Duramax

Most service truck buyers spec the diesel engine for torque and longevity.

  • Chevy Silverado 3500HD: 6.6L Duramax L5P Diesel — 470 hp, 975 lb-ft of torque. The Duramax is also a proven workhorse, and the Allison 10-speed transmission is widely regarded as one of the best automatic transmissions in the segment.

Torque-wise, the Cummins wins. Horsepower-wise, the Duramax wins. For most service body applications, torque matters more — it’s what pulls heavy loads off the line and works up grades. That said, the Allison transmission in the Silverado is a major selling point for fleet operators who want durability.

Frame and Suspension: Long-Term Durability

Both trucks use fully boxed steel frames rated for commercial upfitting. The Ram 3500 uses a coil rear suspension system (with available air ride on higher trims), while the Chevy 3500HD uses a leaf spring rear — which many fleet managers prefer for consistent load performance under heavy service body weight.

For service body upfitting, leaf spring rears are typically preferred because they maintain a consistent ride height under load. If your crew will constantly load and unload the service body, the Silverado’s leaf spring setup may ride more consistently day-to-day.
