Spring Ranch Season Truck Setup: Flatbed, Hay Bed & Gooseneck Prep for Texas and Louisiana

Spring is when ranch trucks earn their keep. Calving wraps up, pastures green up, fence repair and fertilizer runs start, and hay hauling never really stops. If your truck bed is not ready, you lose days. Here is a practical checklist from the team at Star Truck Equipment in Wharton, TX, serving ranchers across Texas and Louisiana.

1. Inspect the Deck and Headache Rack

Walk the whole flatbed. Look for cracked welds, bent stake pockets, loose crossmembers, and rust through at the corners. Check that the headache rack bolts are tight and the cab guard is not rubbing the cab. Small repairs now are cheaper than a failure with a load of round bales.

2. Check Tie-Downs and Hardware

Replace frayed straps and chains, and confirm D-rings and rub rails are solid. If you are constantly improvising tie-downs, consider adding stake pockets or an airline track system. Our truck accessories page covers the common add-ons.

3. Gooseneck and Hitch Prep

Spring means stock trailers and equipment trailers. Grease the gooseneck ball or coupler, check the safety chain anchors, and verify your 7-pin plug works with trailer lights and brakes. Make sure the hitch rating matches your trailer’s loaded weight, and keep payload in mind: the bed, accessories, and tongue weight all count against your truck’s GVWR.

4. Match the Bed to the Job

If you are hauling round bales every week, a purpose-built hay bed or flatbed with the right length and bale spikes makes a real difference. Mixed ranch work with feed sacks, tools, and fence supplies often suits a flatbed with under-deck or side toolboxes. Browse our Bedrock, CM, and Norstar inventory to see what we have in stock.

5. Lighting, Tires, and Fluids

Test every marker, brake, and turn light. Check tire pressure and tread, especially on dually rear axles that carry heavy loads. Change oil and top off fluids before the long summer hauling season.

6. Plan for Storms and Mud

Spring weather across Texas and Louisiana brings heavy rain. Keep recovery straps, a shovel, and a spare in the truck, and avoid overloading when ground is soft.
