Chevy Silverado 4500HD Truck Body Options — Flatbeds, Service Bodies & Crane Bodies
The Chevy Silverado 4500HD is General Motors’ medium-duty commercial truck, stepping well above the 3500HD in payload and GVWR. With a GVWR up to 16,500 lbs and a full cab & chassis configuration, it’s built for serious commercial truck body installations. At Star Truck Equipment in Wharton, TX, we carry flatbeds, service bodies, crane bodies, hay beds, and landscape bodies — all compatible with the Silverado 4500HD.
Silverado 4500HD Cab-to-Axle (CA) Configurations
The 4500HD is offered exclusively as a cab & chassis with multiple CA options to accommodate various commercial body lengths:
- Regular Cab 4×2 — CA 84″, 96″, or 108″
- Crew Cab 4×2 — CA 60″, 84″, or 96″
- Crew Cab 4×4 (optional on select trims) — CA 60″ or 84″
As a guideline, body length = CA + 12–18″. So an 84″ CA supports a 9–10 ft body; a 96″ CA supports a 10–11 ft body; a 108″ CA supports a 11–12 ft body.
Silverado 4500HD vs 3500HD — Why Go Medium Duty?
The jump from the 3500HD to the 4500HD is significant:
- GVWR: 4500HD up to 16,500 lbs vs 3500HD up to 14,000 lbs
- Frame: The 4500HD uses a commercial truck frame — not shared with the consumer pickup lineup
- Transmission: Allison 1000 automatic is standard — designed for vocational duty cycles
- Payload: 4500HD supports heavier crane bodies, lube trucks, and dual-compartment service bodies
For commercial operators who need to stay payload-compliant and run their trucks hard every day, the 4500HD’s commercial platform is worth the investment.
Best Flatbed Bodies for the Silverado 4500HD
All of the following brands are stocked at Star Truck Equipment and fit the 4500HD platform:
- Bedrock Flatbeds — Bedrock’s commercial flatbeds (Granite, Diamond series) are a premium choice. Available in 9–11 ft lengths to match 4500HD CA configurations. Gooseneck prep, cab guards, and LED light packages available.
- CM Truck Beds — CM’s commercial flatbeds (Platform Pro, RD, SK) are well-suited to the 4500HD. Wide selection of lengths and configurations. Popular with Texas contractors and municipalities.
- Norstar Flatbeds — Norstar SD and SM flatbeds are heavy-duty steel with solid frame contact. Great for agricultural and construction use.
- Bradford Built Flatbeds — High-tensile steel construction, built for demanding duty cycles. Bradford Built is popular with Texas ranchers and heavy-haul operators.
- Pronghorn Flatbeds — Pronghorn utility flatbeds offer a strong value proposition with multiple configuration options. Good match for the 4500HD’s medium-duty framework.
Service Bodies for the Silverado 4500HD
The 4500HD’s higher GVWR makes it ideal for full-size service bodies loaded with tools, compressors, and parts inventory:
- STI Service Bodies — STI mechanics truck bodies feature integrated compressor mounts, reel provisions, and deep drawer compartments. Built for utility, oilfield, and heavy equipment service applications.
- Norstar Service Bodies — Clean aluminum-door compartments, available in wide configurations for DRW chassis. Long service life with minimal maintenance.
- RKI Service Bodies — Modular service body designs with flexible compartment configurations. Popular in telecom and municipal fleet applications.
- CM Service Bodies — CM offers both aluminum and steel service bodies in lengths that work well with the 4500HD’s 84–96″ CA range.
Crane Bodies for the Silverado 4500HD
The Silverado 4500HD is a strong platform for crane body installations. Its Allison transmission and commercial frame handle the demanding duty cycle of a crane truck well:
- STI Crane Bodies — STI’s crane bodies are purpose-built for medium-duty chassis like the 4500HD. Features include outrigger pockets, crane pedestal provisions, and integrated hydraulic tank spaces. Available in 10–14 ft lengths.
- RKI Crane/Lube Bodies — RKI’s crane and lube configurations fit the 4500HD’s extended CA configurations. Good option for oilfield lube and crane combo trucks.
DRW Configuration — Standard for Commercial Bodies
The Silverado 4500HD is available in DRW (dual rear wheel) configuration, which is recommended for most commercial body applications. DRW provides improved stability under heavy loads, better weight distribution, and is required for some body/crane weight configurations. Spec DRW if you’re running a crane body, heavy service body, or any application near the GVWR limit.
